The Postgraduate Course in Visual Arts at ECA-USP is offered at the master's and doctoral level in all areas of concentration. The diplomas are issued as a Master or Doctor in Visual Arts and then the specific concentration area of the graduate, namely: Visual Poetics; or Theory, Teaching and Learning of Art.
The Post-Graduation in Arts at ECA-USP is the oldest in Brazil in the area of Arts. His master's degree was instituted in 1972 and officially implemented in 1974, the second master's degree in Arts in Brazil only appeared 11 years later, in 1985. The PhD program in Arts, also a pioneer in 1980, was the only Brazilian doctorate for 15 years .
As of July 2006, the Arts Program at ECA-USP, which was composed of the areas of Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Musicology, was split into three autonomous Graduate Programs ,. Our Program then became known as the Post-Graduate Program in Visual Arts at ECA-USP.
Since its creation, the Plastic Arts Department at ECA-USP has stood out for its commitment to excellence in teaching combined with Art research, that is, it has established itself, both from its teachers and from its student body, for a quality of production, which participates notably in the contemporary art scene. The reaffirmation of these goals stems from the composition of its faculty, renewed in order to maintain the same historical levels of quality, and the updated preservation of its lines of research and its undergraduate and graduate curricular structures.

The Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts at the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo aims to produce and foster research in the field of Visual Arts, in order to: ensure the necessary interface between theory and practice; consolidate the connection between creation and reflection, and train qualified professionals for production and teaching.
Concentration area that privileges the ways of operating, within the scope of the project and the process, of the work of art. It develops around two lines of research, namely:
Creation Processes in Visual Arts
Design and execution of works in visual arts, with an emphasis on poetics; development of both theoretical and experimental research on artistic processes.
Multimedia
Development of works and research in art that relate different media through hybridization processes; projects and research involving digital media with creations in art.
In each of these lines of research, the works are practical and theoretical and must cover the main aspects of each one.
This area of concentration develops studies and research projects in theory, history, art criticism and foundations of artistic learning, aiming at understanding the artistic phenomenon at the levels of production, perception and dissemination. Research lines:
Art History, Criticism and Theory
The Line of Research in History, Criticism and Art Theory studies art work, based on its specificities and in its relationship with the general context of practices and ideas in which it is constituted. It is supported, therefore, in the analysis of the works, in the study of the contributions of the critic and in the reflection in several areas of knowledge. The line of research comprises: historical, critical and theoretical investigations of modern and contemporary art and the discourse of art criticism, from the 18th century to the present; having as privileged objects artistic production, art criticism and other instances of the local art system in their specificities.
Fundamentals of Art Teaching and Learning
This line of research aims to study the contents, methodologies and philosophical principles that underlie the teaching of arts in schools and bodies of Basic and Higher Education, not only in the school sphere, but also in other institutions linked to artistic practices and experiences, such as Museums, Cultural Centers and other entities promoting experimental practices.
Its main objective is to provide instruments for reflection on artistic practice, aesthetic canons and the pedagogical action of art teachers, to stimulate research on the components of artistic learning and on the processes through which art knowledge is built by children, adolescents and adults.
