CTR's research area is based on the investigation and analysis of audiovisual communication, as well as the study of historical, political, social, economic and technological issues involved in the development and consumption of this field of artistic production. An important characteristic of the activities developed in the department is their frequent connection to the artistic and technical production of its faculty, expressed through scriptwriting, as well as the conception and participation in the realization of documentary, experimental and fictional audiovisual works of different natures and formats.

Situated at the intersection between the fields of Communication (applied social sciences) and the Arts, research related to the study of the audiovisual communication includes contributions from very different areas such as history, aesthetics, the study of media, criticism, semiotics, sociology, anthropology, economics, information technology and engineering, among others.

In response to the greater uniqueness of its field of action, in 2010 CTR created an autonomous Audiovisual Media and Processes postgraduate program, aiming to meet both the specificities of its area and articulate research, practical realization and artistic techniques implicit in a range of the work developed in the field.

In addition to its postgraduate program, the department hosts numerous research groups certified by USP and registered with the CNPq, involved with a diversity of themes and approaches, such as live-action films, animation, social issues and urban mobility in the audiovisual sector, cinema and history, representations of violence, technological innovations, etc.
